1. Sharpening its missile prowess, India on Monday successfully test-fired the indigenously developed nuclear-capable Prithvi II surface-to-surface missile with a strike range of 350km from a test range in Odisha.

2. International Youth Day(12 Aug) is being observed today across the globe. The theme this year is -- Youth Migration: Moving Development Forward.

3. Chidambaram announces quasi-sovereign bonds to defend rupee. Here are the highlights of what the Finance Minister said:

>We will have to do more on the rupee
>Current account deficit concerns reflecting on rupee
>Indian economy facing challenges
>Government will issue quasi-sovereign bonds, take steps to curb gold demand to defend rupee
>FY14 current account deficit target at $70 billion or 3.7 per cent of the GDP

**Definition of Quasi-sovereign bonds****is a debt security issued by a national government within a given country and denominated in a foreign currency. The foreign currency used will most likely be a hard currency, and may represent significantly more risk to the bondholder.*******

4. Govt introduces Bill in Lok Sabha to amend SEBI laws. The Securities Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2013, was introduced by Minister of State for Finance Namo Narain Meena. The Bill is to amend the Securities and Exchange Board of India Act, 1992, the Securities Contracts (Regulation) Act, 1956 and the Depositories Act, 1996.

5. A bill to amend the Right to Information Act 2005, RTI Amendment 2013 was introduced in Lok Sabha by the Minister of State for Personnel Mr. V Narayanasamy.

7. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, tasked with protecting and promoting public health, has warned two websites selling ‘bidis’ and Indian cigarettes of action for sale of adulterated tobacco products. In a July 26 letter to these websites, the FDA said their several products did not carry the permits required.

9. India, on 11 August 2013 named Sardar Singh as the captain of the 18-member squad in the Asia Cup hockey tournament, which is scheduled to take place from 24 August 2013 to 1 September 2013 in Ipoh, Malaysia.

10.The government is looking to contain gold imports at 850 tonnes, Finance Minister P. Chidambaram said on Monday, as part of efforts to cut the current account deficit, which has hit a record high.
