Spur : Peace of mind

Once Buddha was walking from one town to another town with a few of his followers. This was in the initial days. While they were travelling, they happened to pass a lake. They stopped there and Buddha told one of his disciples, “I am thirsty. Do get me some water from that lake there.”
The disciple walked up to the lake. When he reached it, he noticed that some people were washing clothes in the water and, right at that moment, a bullock cart started crossing through the lake. As a result, the water became very muddy, very turbid. The disciple thought, “How can I give this muddy water to Buddha to drink!” So he came back and told Buddha, “The water in there is very muddy. I don’t think it is fit to drink.”
After about half an hour, again Buddha asked the same disciple to go back to the lake and get him some water to drink. The disciple obediently went back to the lake. This time he found that the lake had absolutely clear water in it. The mud had settled down and the water above it looked fit to be had. So he collected some water in a pot and brought it to Buddha.
Buddha looked at the water, and then he looked up at the disciple and said, “See what you did to make the water clean. You let it be ... and the mud settled down on its own – and you got clear water... Your mind is also like that. When it is disturbed, just let it be. Give it a little time. It will settle down on its own. You don’t have to put in any effort to calm it down. It will happen. It is effortless.”
What did Buddha emphasize here? He said, “It is effortless.”
Having 'peace of mind' is not a strenuous job; it is an effortless process. When there is peace inside you, that peace permeates to the outside. It spreads around you and in the environment, such that people around start feeling that peace and grace.

Spur : The Wooden Bowl

A frail old man went to live with his son, daughter-in-law, and four-year-old grandson. The old man’s hands trembled, his eyesight was blurred, and his step faltered.

The family ate together at the table, but the elderly man’s shaky hands and failing sight made eating difficult. Peas rolled off his spoon onto the floor, and, when he picked up his glass, milk spilled on the tablecloth.

The son and daughter-in-law became irritated with the mess. “We must do something about father,” said the son. “I’ve had enough of his noisy eating, spilled milk, and food on the floor.”

So , the husband and wife set a small table in the corner. There,
Grandfather ate alone while the rest of the family enjoyed dinner together. And, since Grandfather had broken a dish or two, his food was served in a wooden bowl.

Occasionally, the family would glance in Grandfather’s direction during a meal and see a tear in his eye as he sat alone. Still, the only words the couple had for him were sharp admonitions whenever he dropped a fork or spilled food.

The couple’s four-year-old watched all of this in silence. One evening before supper the father noticed his son sitting on the floor, playing with scraps of wood. He asked the child sweetly, “What are you making?” Just as sweetly, the boy responded, “I’m making a little bowl for you and Mama to eat your food in
when I grow up.” The boy smiled and went back to work.

The child’s words so struck the parents that they were speechless. Within moments tears were streaming down their cheeks. Though not a word was spoken, both knew what must be done.

That evening, as the family was about to sit down to dinner, the husband gently took his father’s hand and led him to the family table. For the remainder of his days he ate every meal with the family. And, for some reason, neither the husband nor the wife seemed to care any longer when a fork was dropped, milk
spilled, or the tablecloth was soiled.

Revolt of 1857

The causes of revolt:

Political Causes:
1. Growing suspicion among native rulers over Lord Dalhousie's policies of "Doctrine of Lapse" and Annexation of the Territories of Native Rulers
2. Annexation of Avadh on the ground of "misgovernance"
3. Disposing of Nawab Wazid Ali Shah, athe reigning ruler of Avadh
4. Lord canning's announcement to that Mughals would lose the title of King and be mere Princess
5. Disbanding of the Pindaris and irregular soliders who constitued a large section among the army ranks

Administrative and economic causes:
1. Inefficient administrative machinery of the company
2. Rampant corruption
3. Racialism in civil and military administration
4. Deprivation of the traditional ruling classes of their luxury due to the establishment of the company's suzerainty over the Indian states;
5. Introduction of new and revenue system which snatched the land from cultivator and gave it to the moneylender or traitor
6. De-industrialisation of the country

Military causes :
1. Dispenser of Indian sepoys with alien rule
2. Compulsion of the sepoys to serve at the cantonments
3. Withdrawal of free postage facility to sepoys following the enactment of Post Office Act of 1854
4. Debarring the foreign service allowance or batta for sepoys serving in Sindh and Punjab
5. Racial discrimination.

Social and Religious causes :

3. Enactment of the Religious Dis-abilities act 1850, which enabled a convert to inherit his ancestral property
4. Antagonism of the traditional Indian society into to the law prohibiting sati, child marriage and female infanticide.

The Immediate cause: -

Greased Cartridges: The government introduced a new Enfield rifle the Army. It's cartridges had a greased paper cover which had to be bitten off before the cartridge was loaded into the rifle. It was believed that increase was composed of beef and pig fat. The Hindu as well as Muslim sepoys was enraged because the use of greased cartridges was against their religion and they feared that the government was deliberately trying to destroy their religion and convert to Christianity. The time to rebel has come.

Causes for the failure of Revolt :

1. By July 1858, the revolt was completely suppressed. Following factors may be the reason for the failure of revolt:
2. Lack of coordination and central leadership. The revolt was supposed to have started on May 31, 1857 as decided by Nana Saheb and his colleagues. But the Merrut incidence led to early breaking of the revolt
3. Lack of forward looking program.
4. Indian leaders lacked resources and experience as compared to British.
5. Lack of support and martial races of the North
6. British power have remained intact in the eastern, western and southern parts of India from where the forces were sent to suppress the revolt
7. Tacit support of certain sections of Indian public.
8. Limited territorial and base.
9. Many native Indian states, influenced by the example of powerful Hyderabad, did not join the revolt.
10. Sikh soldiers of the Punjab area remained loyal to the British throughout.
11. The aging Bahadur Shah was neither a brave general not an astute leader of people.

Impacts of the Revolt : The impacts of the 1857 revolt may be summarised as---

1. In August 1850, the British Parliament passed an act for Better Government of India, 1858, which put an end to the rule of the Company. The control of the British government in India was transfered to the British Crown.
2. A minister of British government, called the Secretary of State, was made responsible for the Government of India.
3. The British Governor general of India was now also given the title of Viceroy, who was also the representative of the Monarch.
4. Marked the end of British imperialism and Princely states were assured against annexation. Doctrine of Lapse was withdrawn.
5. Marked the end of Peshwaship and the Mughal rule.
6. After the revolt, the British pursued the policy of divide and rule.
7. Far-reaching changes were made in the administration and increase of white soldiers in the army.
8. Total expense of the suppression of the Revolt was borne by the Indians.

Spur : A Small Story With Powerful Lesson

The Professor began his class by holding up a glass with some water in it. He held it up for all to see & asked the students “How much do you think this glass weighs?”
.
’50gms!’….. ’100gms!’ …..’125 gms’ …the students answered.
.
“I really don’t know unless I weigh it,” said the professor, “but, my question is:
What would happen if I held it up like this for a few minutes?”…. .
‘Nothing’ …..the students said.
.
‘Ok what would happen if I held it up like this for an hour?’ the professor asked.
‘Your arm would begin to ache’ said one of the student
.
“You’re right, now what would happen if I held it for a day?”
“Your arm could go numb; you might have severe muscle stress & paralysis & have to go to hospital for sure!”
….. Ventured another student & all the students laughed
.
“Very good.
But during all this, did the weight of the glass change?” Asked the professor.
‘No’…. Was the answer.
“Then what caused the arm ache & the muscle stress?”
.
The students were puzzled.
“What should I do now to come out of pain?” asked professor again.
“Put the glass down!” said one of the students
.
“Exactly!” said the professor.
Life’s problems are something like this.
.
Hold it for a few minutes in your head & they seem OK.
Think of them for a long time & they begin to ache.
.
Hold it even longer & they begin to paralyze you. You will not be able to do anything.
.
It’s important to think of the challenges or problems in your life, But EVEN MORE IMPORTANT is to ‘PUT THEM DOWN’ at the end of every day before you go to sleep…
.
That way, you are not stressed, you wake up every day fresh &strong & can handle any issue, any challenge that comes your way!
.
Moral
So, when you start your day today, Remember friend to ‘PUT THE GLASS DOWN TODAY! ‘

New Year's Eve 2013 inspires last Google doodle of the year

https://www.google.co.in/

The doodle features numbers 2, 0, 1, and 3 on the dance floor with the number 4 waiting along the sides, waiting for its turn to replace 3. The dance floor is made up of little squares that are changing colours, designed to represent the floor lights in various colours. The word Google is seen sandwiched between two speakers, with the second O replaced by a disco ball.
Also present on the Google home page is the text "What did the world search for this year? Remember the moments of 2013", with a link to the Google Zeitgeist 2013. This has of course been seen for a while, and is not a new addition.
Though the latest Google doodle looks interactive, we tried various browsers and we couldn't get the doodle to do anything except show Google search results for New Year's Eve 2013. The first result is a Google search card that says, "Tuesday, December 31 New Year's Eve 2013", similar to what you get while searching for other important days like Diwali 2013 on Google India, or Memorial Day 2013 on the Google US homepage.
The rest of the page looks like any other Google results page, with news, image and search results for the query New Year's Eve 2013. Many search results refer to fireworks planned on New Year's Eve 2013. Interestingly, New Year's Eve 2016 comes as a related search for the phrase, which has us wondering - who starts their party planning three years early?
NDTV Gadgets would like to wish its readers a safe New Year's Eve 2013 and a Happy New Year.

DESCRIPTION OF BLACKBEARD

The wicked pirate Blackbeard, who in real life was Edward Teach, was a tall man with a very long black beard that hid most of his face and extended down to his waist. He is often associated with the meanest of the Pirates in history and one of merciless to have wrecked havoc on the brave seafarers during The Golden Age of Pirates.

Blackbeard tied his beard up in pigtails adorned with black ribbons. He wore a bandolier over his shoulders with three braces of pistols and was reported to hang two slow-burning cannon fuses from his fur cap that wreathed his head in black smoke. Occasionally, he would set fire to his rum using gunpowder, and he would drink it, flames and all. Others claimed he would fight with matches lit in his beard to strike fear in the heart of his enemies. It would be hard not to believe as many did, Blackbeard was the Devil incarnate. Blackbeard was a master of intimidation. With fire in his eyes; a brace of pistols, daggers, and a cutlass at his side; slow burning fuses protruding from under his tri-cornered hat; and his thick black beard was often tangled and decorated with red ribbons. It is said that Teach sent most merchant captains scurrying to raise the white flag at the mere sight of him.

HISTORY OF MANIFESTATIONS:

About 250 years ago, this gruesome figure had his head chopped off near a place called “The Point” known today as “Teach’s Hole.” It is here he would seek anchorage in his later years!
Edward Teach was killed by Lt. Robert Maynard of the British Royal Navy when his vessel The HMS Ranger and HMS Jane engaged The Adventure captained by Blackbeard near Teach’s Hole. Blackbeard had retired from Piracy having agreed to a pardon by swearing allegiance to the crown. However, the Governor of Virginia, Alexander Spotswood, was not assuaged. He wanted Blackbeard gone for good and sent Maynard for the job. When they came upon Blackbeard's Adventure, they were hit with a devastating broadside attack. Midshipman Hyde, captain of the smaller HMS Jane, was killed along with six other men. Ten men were also wounded in the surprise attack. The sloop fell astern and was little help in the following action. Maynard continued his pursuit in HMS Ranger, managing to blast the Adventure's rigging, forcing it ashore. Maynard ordered many of his crew into the holds and readied to be boarded. As his ship approached, Blackbeard saw the mostly empty decks, assumed it was safe to board, and did so with ten men, climb aboard The Ranger.
Maynard emerged with his men and engaged Teach in a bloody fight to the death.Blackbeard fought hard. However, he died from blood loss from suffering so many wounds in close quarters combat with Maynard. He was reportedly loading his pistol when he finally keeled out and collapsed on the deck.

In death, his grisly head continued to inspire dread. Hung from the bowsprit of Maynard’s vessel, Blackbeard’s head was carried to various ports in eastern North Carolina. Ultimately, it was impaled on a stake at the entrance to the harbor in Hampton, Virginia as a warning to other “Brethren of the Coast” that rule of law had returned to the Outer Banks and the days of Piracy were ending. It gets better. Before sailing from Ocracoke Inlet, Lt. Maynard tossed Blackbeard’s body over the side of his ship into dark murky water. Legend has it that the remainder of the pirate crew, now shackled and bound for trial, watched in awe as the headless body of their captain, perhaps in one last act of devilish defiance, swam three times around the vessel before sinking silently below the surface to the depths of the water.

MANIFESTATIONS:

Blackbeard's ghost is said to haunt the land near where he was killed. Islanders that are brave and foolhardy enough to venture out to the Point after dark have routinely reported encountering the ghost of Blackbeard himself, pacing along the shoreline, lost in agony, presumably looking for missing head.

Kallis departs with a win

For India, the first session on Day 5 was very crucial. The lack of experience in the visitors' side and a few bad shots gave South Africa an upper hand early in the day. Soon, India were on the receiving end and struggling to save the match. Eventually, the second best Test team posted a paltry target of 58 for the world's best to win the match and seal the series.
King Kallis
"Jacques Kallis, the only player to score 10,000 runs and take 200 wickets in Test cricket." His team-mates wore T-shirts with this text, specially printed for the occasion and carried King Kallis out of the ground on their shoulders. The South African legend brought a fairytale ending to his illustrious career and overshadowed two other champions of the game - Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting - by scoring a ton in his final Test against India at Durban. He scored 115, eventually becoming Ravindra Jadeja's fifth victim in the innings but his efforts helped him become the third-highest Test scorer (13,289 runs) - finishing one run ahead of Rahul Dravid. In his farewell speech that lasted barely five minutes, Kallis said that he will miss the friendships, winning times and losing times the most. It was anything but the elaborate farewell that Sachin Tendulkar got at Wankhede.
End of Durban jinx
South Africa beat India by 10 wickets and sealed the two-match series comprehensively. The win that got the Proteas two ranking points, is their first Test win in Durban since 2008. A match that was evenly poised, changed its course in one session and enabled South Africa to send-off Kallis in style. The Indian team, that has never won a Test series in the Rainbow Nation will have to wait longer.

A man died, when he realized it, he saw God coming closer with a suitcase in his hand.
- God said: Alright son its time to go.
- surprised the man responded: Now? So soon? I had a lot of plans...
- I'm sorry but its time to go.

- What do you have in that suitcase? the man asked.
- God answered: Your belongings.
- My belongings? you mean my things, my clothes, my money?
-God answered: Those things were not yours they belonged to the earth.

- Is it my memories? the man asked.
-God answered: those never belonged to you they belonged to Time

- Is it my talents?
-God answered: those were never yours they belonged to the circumstances.

- Is it my friends and family?
-God answered: I'm sorry they were never yours they belonged to the path.

- Is it my wife and son?
- God answered: They were never yours the belonged to your heart.

- Is it my body?
- God answered: that was never yours it belonged to the dust.

-Is it my soul?
God answered: No that is mine.

Full of fear, the man took the suitcase from god and opened it just to find out the suitcase was empty.
- With a tear coming down his cheek the man said: I never had anything???
-God answered: that is correct, every moment you lived were only for yours. You never lived for somebody who is not related to u in any way.

Spur : THE WISE OLD MAN

A wealthy man requested an old scholar to wean his son away from his bad habits.  The scholar took the youth for a stroll through a garden. Stopping suddenly he asked the boy to pull out a tiny plant growing there.
The youth held the plant between his thumb and forefinger and pulled it out. The old man then asked him to pull out a slightly bigger plant. The youth pulled hard and the plant came out, roots and all. “Now pull out that one,” said the old man pointing to a bush. The boy had to use all his strength to pull it out.
“Now take this one out,” said the old man, indicating a guava tree. The youth grasped the trunk and tried to pull it out. But it would not budge. “It’s impossible,” said the boy, panting with the effort.
“So it is with bad habits,” said the sage. “When they are young it is easy to pull them out but when they take hold they cannot be uprooted.”
The session with the old man changed the boy’s life.
"Don’t wait for Bad Habits to grow in you, drop them while you have control over it else they will get control you."

Spur: Story of Office boy

A jobless man applied for the position of ‘office boy’ at a very big company.

The employer interviewed him, then a test: clean the floor.

“You are hired.” – the employer said. ”Give me your email address, and I’ll send you the application to fill, as well as when you will start.”

The man replied, “I don’t have a computer, neither an email.”

“I’m sorry,” said the employer, “if you don’t have an email , you cannot have the job.”

The man left with no hope. He didn’t know what to do, with only $10 USD in his pocket.

He then decided to go to the supermarket, bought a 10 kg tomato crate, then sold the tomatoes door to door. In less than two hours, he succeeded and doubled his capital. He repeated the operation 3 times and returned home with $60 USD. The man realized that he could survive by this way, and started to go everyday earlier, and returned late. Thus, his money doubled or tripled everyday. Shortly later, he bought a cart, then a truck, and then he had his own fleet of delivery vehicles.

Five years later, the man’s company was one of the biggest food retailers. He started to plan his family’s future, and decided to have a life insurance. He called an insurance broker and chose a protection plan. When the conversation was concluded, the broker asked him his email. The man replied: “I don’t have an email.”

The broker replied curiously, “You don’t have an email, and yet have succeeded to build an empire. Do you imagine what position you could have if you had an email?”

The man paused for a while, and replied: “An office boy!”

"Don’t be discouraged if something is not in your favor today. Better opportunities are always waiting ahead."

Winter solstice: Google doodles the first day of winter

December 21 is the shortest day of the year and the longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. The winter solstice usually occurs on either December 21 or December 22.
During the winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere the sun is the farthest south. The winter solstice occurs on June 21 or 22 in the Southern Hemisphere when the sun is the farthest north.
The solstice happens twice in a year, during summer and winter. On a solstice the sun is at its greatest distance from the celestial equator. During the summer solstice days are the longest and nights shortest and the opposite of this happens on the winter solstice.

December 21 is winter solstice and therefore the shortest day and the longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.

Google is commemorating the arrival of the winter in the Northern Hemisphere with an animated winter solstice doodle showing a pair of hands weaving a long woollen hand glove that loops to form the Google letters. Google has used the same animated doodle on June 21 this year to mark the first day of winter in the Southern Hemisphere.
On June 22, 2011 Google had posted a floral 'first day of summer' doodle on its India home page created by Japanese artist Takashi Murakami.
