Google Chrome Has a Bug That Lets Any Site Eavesdrop On You

Voice control is an awesomely futuristic way to control your technology like a spaceman, but only if you can trust it. So you might want to stay tight-lipped around Chrome; Google's browser has a dangerous security flaw that can let malicious sites eavesdrop on your every word.

Discovered by web developer Tal Ater, the bug in question is simple when exploited. All a malicious site has to do is get you to enable voice control for any legitimate purpose—maybe you want to dictate some text to a webapp, or record some noise for whatever reason—and it can potentially access your computer's mic long after you've navigated away.

All it needs to do is shoot out a pop-under window disguised as an ordinary ad, or something similarly innocuous, to keep your microphone hot. As long as it remains open, every noise you make will be sent back to Google through Chrome, and then on to the snoopers for whatever purpose they see fit. And there's no way for you to tell that the site you visited 20 minutes ago is still up to no good.

The dirty trick actually requires the use of a number of exploits, but the big one is that in Chrome, only full-on tabs indicate that they're listening in via your microphone. Smaller banner windows can continue to listen without showing anything at all. Tal reached out to Google with the bugs months ago, and Google confirmed to him that they were security flaws. But four months later, a fix still hasn't been pushed live to users. As of this post, the exploit still works.

The good news is that you need to initiate Chrome's voice recognition in the first place for this to work. Until a fix comes, you can protect yourself by just never talking to Chrome, or only activating your microphone on trusted sites. Still, the existence of flaws like this (that aren't promptly sewn up) makes it a little harder to be excited about the Star Trek future of an always-on microphone can enable, and makes it easier to be creeped out that Google and god-knows-who-else could be listening to talk to yourself at three in the morning.

Education Under Fast Tracks

Rajesh Sharma's school has no desks or chairs. The "roof" is a metro railway bridge 10 meters overhead. The blackboards are black rectangles painted on the wall of the adjacent station. Despite its makeshift nature, the school offers hope to poor children in the neighborhood.

Mr Sharma, 41, who runs a grocery across the street from the Yamuna Vihar metro station, started the school three years ago to offer free education to the children of the local laborers and farmers.

Being poor and mostly illiterate, the families of these children usually either see no need for them to be educated, or worry about the costs involved, particularly when sending them to school means they cannot help to support the family.

Mr Sharma himself dropped out of college in his third year because of his family's financial difficulties. The idea to open a school came to him on a morning walk along the Yamuna river when he saw some children weeding and picking flowers.

"I asked them which school they go to and they looked at me at with no answer. It had not occurred to me before that not every child has access to a school." Mr Sharma says.

So Mr Sharma and his friend, Laxmi Chandra, a retired teacher, teach classes under the metro bridge for two hours every weekday morning. The students, who now number more than 70, sit on foam mats and recite after their teachers as trains rumble overhead and traffic rolls past a few meters away. While the younger children learn the English alphabet, those between 10 and 16 study mathematics, from multiplication tables to geometry, taught by Mr Chandra.

Mr Sharma initially bore the entire cost of providing the children with textbooks, pencils and exercise books.

Over time, people who heard about the school began dropping off supplies, sometimes anonymously.

"One man came with 60 school bags once. He would not tell me his name or what he did. He said none of that mattered as long as the children got a decent education."

Mr Sharma started the school with the aim of providing children from poor families with a basic education.

However, after the government enforced the 2009 Right to Education Act last year, which guarantees free schooling for children between the ages of 6 and 14, Mr Sharma decided to focus on preparing the children for admission to school and helping them to cope with the curriculum.

However the difficulties in the cause don't end there. The children of farmers and laborers are reluctant to enroll, influenced mainly by the prejudice of their parents, most of whom are illiterate.

Mr Sharma has to battle constantly to get parents to send their children to his classes for just a couple of hours each day.

"They say, 'My son is too old now to catch up with the rest of his age group and study. Let us put him to work'," he said.

"The excuses for the daughters are even worse. Most of the time they cannot even bring themselves to believe that she deserves an education. Other times they are just waiting to marry her off."

Spur: The game is over

A young boy enters a barber shop and the barber whispers to his customer, “This is the dumbest kid in the world. Watch while I prove it to you.”

The barber puts a dollar bill in one hand and two quarters in the other, then calls the boy over and asks, “Which do you want, son?” The boy takes the quarters and leaves.

“What did I tell you?” said the barber. “That kid never learns!”

Later, when the customer leaves, he sees the same young boy coming out of the ice cream store.

“Hey, son! May I ask you a question?

Why did you take the quarters instead of the dollar bill?”

The boy licked his cone and replied,

“Because the day I take the dollar, the game is over!”

Spur: This tree will manage our stress

One carpenter was hired to help us restore our old farmhouse. He had just finished a rough first day on the job. A flat tire made him lose an hour of work, his electric saw quit, and now his ancient pickup truck refused to start.

While I drove him home, he sat in stony silence. On arriving, he invited me in to meet the family. As we walked toward the front door, he paused briefly at a small tree, touching the tips of the branches with both hands.

After opening the door, he underwent an amazing transformation. His face was wreathed in smiles, and he hugged his two small children and then gave his wife a kiss.

Afterward, he walked me to my car. We passed the tree, and my curiosity got the better of me. I asked him about what I had seen him do earlier.

“Oh, that’s my trouble tree,” he replied. “I know I can’t help having troubles on the job, but one thing for sure, troubles don’t belong in the house with my wife and children. So I just hang them up on the tree every night when I come home. Then in the morning, I pick them up again.”

“Funny thing is,” he smiled, “ when I come out in the morning to pick them up, there aren't nearly as many as I remember hanging up the night before. ”

"ALL WE HAVE TO DO IS TO FIND ONE SUCH TREE IN FRONT OF OUR HOUSE & START THIS PRACTICE AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE AFTER READING THIS "

This Week's Sky at a Glance : Some night sky sights for January 10 – 18

Friday, January 10

  • Look left of the Moon at nightfall for the Pleiades, as shown here. The Pleiades are straight above the Moon by about 8 or 9.
  • Bright Capella high overhead, and bright Rigel in Orion's foot (both magnitude 0), are at almost the same right ascension. So they cross your sky’s north-south meridian at almost the same time. Capella now passes closest to straight overhead around 10 p.m., depending on how far east or west you live in your time zone. (It goes exactly through the zenith if you're at latitude 46° north: Portland, Oregon; Montreal; central France.) Whenever Capella is passing closest to the zenith, Rigel always marks true south over your landscape.
  • Saturday, January 11

  • Aldebaran shines below the Moon at dusk, as shown here. It swings around to the left of the Moon by about 11 p.m.
  • Jupiter’s Great Red Spot transits Jupiter’s central meridian around 9:30 p.m. EST.
  • Venus is at inferior conjunction, passing 5° north of the Sun today.
  • Sunday, January 12

  • The bright gibbous Moon shines in a particularly starry part of the sky. After dinnertime, look upper right of the Moon for Aldebaran, below the Moon for Betelgeuse in Orion's leftmost corner, farther upper left of it for Capella, and far lower left of the Moon for bright Jupiter in the middle of Gemini.
  •   Monday, January 13

  • Betelgeuse is lower right of the Moon this evening. Jupiter is to the Moon's lower left, with Pollux on beyond. Look far under the Moon for Procyon.
  • Tuesday, January 14

  • Jupiter shines left of the nearly full Moon early this evening. Ganymede, the largest and brightest moon of Jupiter itself, slowly emerges out of eclipse from Jupiter's shadow around 10:21 p.m. EST. With a telescope, watch for this happening just off Jupiter's eastern limb.
  •  Wednesday, January 15

  • Full Moon (exact at 11:52 p.m. EST). This is the smallest full Moon of 2014. Jupiter shines above it in early evening. As the evening grows late, Jupiter swings to the Moon's upper right.
  •  Thursday, January 16
  • As the Moon climbs up in the east, spot Procyon to its upper right, bright Jupiter higher above them, and Sirius far right of the Moon in the southeast, under Orion.
  • Friday, January 17
  • As the stars come out, face north and look very high overhead for Cassiopeia, oriented now like a flattened letter M. As the night proceeds, it swings down in the northwest tilting sideways.
  • Saturday, January 18
  • This the Big Dipper's time of year to swing up from the low north-northeast after dusk to stand on its handle in the northeast by about 9 p.m.
