21 August: Top 10 Current Affairs

1. Following in the footsteps of Asian giants Japan and Singapore, this West Bengal capital may soon get India's first floating solar power station by 2014. Such solar power stations comprise floating platforms (usually hexagonal)fitted with solar panels to generate more energy than land-based plants.

2. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Tuesday announced its decision to buy long-term government bonds worth Rs 80 billion (nearly $1.3bn) to pump more liquidity into the country's banking system. The central bank said that it would buy government bonds through open market purchase operations (OMOs) route on 23rd of August.

3. The Reserve Bank of India, RBI has further relaxed the Statutory Liquidity Ratio, SLR to provide more funds to banks for lending. 
This was in view of losses suffered by banks in their investment portfolio. Revising its earlier limit, asking banks to reduce their hold-to-maturity bond holdings gradually to 23 per cent of deposits, RBI has now allowed banks to retain those holdings at 24.5 percent.

4. Market regulator SEBI has allowed mutual funds to trade directly on debt platforms of recognised stock exchanges. In a notification issued from Mumbai, SEBI has said that asset management companies appointed by mutual fund houses will be permitted to register themselves under 'proprietary trading members' category of stock exchanges. 

5. India welcomes BRICS Biz Council pact to partner for African development. President Jacob Zuma has asked the BRICS members to use the bloc's Business Council as a platform to explore new models and approaches towards more equitable development and inclusive growth in the world. 

6. Information and Broadcasting Ministry has requested Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to expedite its advice on the existing sectoral caps of FDI in Broadcasting Sector. It has also requested the Press Council of India (PCI) to expedite its advice on the proposal to increase the FDI in Print Media. 

7. Virat Kohli is the highest-ranked Indian batsman at sixth n the latest ICC Twenty20 Rankings issued on Wednesday. First ranking is secured by Brendon McCullum from NZ, second place goes to Alex Hales from ENG and the third ranking is snatched by Shane Watson from Australia.

8. An IAF C 130J Super Hercules lands at the world’s highest Daulat Beg Oldie airstrip in Ladakh near the Line of Control Tuesday. 

9. Citizens can now file RTI applications online in all central government ministries and departments through a portal. The facility will be launched by the Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, V Narayanasamy in New Delhi this evening. At present, it is available only to 40 ministries, departments and commissions. The web address of the portal is www.rtionline.gov.in

10. Mukesh Ambani’s Antilia is the only private house that features among the 15 most expensive buildings in the world. Antilia secured rank 9th rank.
