1. Food security bill is going to pass today from the parliament. It will give nation’s two-third population, the right to get five kg of food grains every month, at highly subsidised rates of Rs one-three per kg.

2. The United Nations General Assembly on Friday proclaimed April 6 as the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace. The President of General Assembly, Vuk Jeremic, hailed the decision a “historic” step in recognising the power of sport to erase cultural barriers and mobilise people around the world.

3. Ramya, who was Saturday elected to Lok Sabha from Mandya constituency in Karnataka, is the first female actor from the state to enter parliament.

4. The Indian classical singer and music director, Pandit Raghunath Panigrahi passed away on 25 August 2013 in Bhubaneswar. He was 80 years of age. He is known as the vocalist of Jayadeva’s Gita Govind. He died because of cardiac arrest.

5. Bollywood actor and UNICEF (United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund) Goodwill Ambassador Amitabh Bachchan on 23 August 2013 joined the UN and its humanitarian partners to promote The World Needs More global campaign.

6. The Chinese military has launched the first ingeniously developed military attack helicopter WZ-10 successfully for its first air-to-air missile.

7. The fourth and final Grand Slam of the season, the US Open Tennis tournament, kicks off in New York.

8. The government has set up a Tax Administration Reform Commission to review the application of tax policies and tax laws in the country.

9. The Supreme Court has asked the Centre to file its response on a PIL seeking initiation of removal process of former Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan from the post of NHRC Chairman for his alleged misbehaviour and purchase of benami properties.

10. UN Human Rights Commissioner Navi Pillai, who is on a fact-finding mission in Sri Lanka, began her week-long tour today morning with meetings with Justice Minister Rauff Hakeem, Minister for Social Integration Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Chief Justice Mohan Peiris and members of Diplomatic Corps in Colombo.
