1. Veteran leader Robert Mugabe was sworn in as Zimbabwe's president for another five-year term on Thursday.

2. The second South Asian Diaspora Convention (SADC) will be hosted by Singapore. The event will be organised by The Institute of South Asian Studies (ISAS) on 21-23 November 2013 and it will be on the theme of Connecting Global South Asians.

3. Tata Steel on 22 August 2013 was adjudged the Best Performing Integrated Steel Plant in the country for the year 2011-12 based on the recommendations made by a Panel of Judges that selected companies for the Prime Minister's Trophy awards for the year 2011-12.

4. The comprehensive economic partnership agreement between India and ASEAN has inched closer with ministers of both sides endorsing the final text of the pact in Brunei. Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma, who is in Brunei, participated in the ASEAN-India Consultations yesterday.

5. The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) on Wednesday imposed a penalty of 3.10 crore rupees on Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance for violation of various norms, including those related to early-death claims and group insurance.

6. Russian world number three Maria Sharapova has pulled out of the US Open because of a right shoulder injury, tournament organizers have announced.

7. Nishi Vasudeva is set to break that proverbial glass ceiling by becoming the first woman to head an oil company when she takes over the reins of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd.

8. Egypt's ousted leader Hosni Mubarak was released from prison today. The release threatened to stoke the unrest as the Arab nation is already roiled in a crisis over a military coup against Morsi. But the decision to place him under house arrest instead of letting him go free appeared designed to ease some of the criticism over releasing Mubarak and to ensure that he appears in court next week for a separate trial.

9. Nearly three months after he had to resign as Union Law minister in a blaze of controversy, Ashwani Kumar has been appointed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as his Special Envoy to visit Japan in the rank of a Cabinet Minister.

10. Data released by the US Department of Homeland Security shows that India gets the lion's share of all H-1B visas issued in the country. What is more, the share of Indians has gone up to 64% in 2012 from 58% in 2011. In other words, H-1B stakes are only growing for Asia's third-largest economy given the immigration bill that the US Senate passed in June.
