1. In the first conviction in the December 16 gangrape case on Saturday, the juvenile accused was found guilty of murder and rape of the 23-year-old girl. But, he got away with a maximum of three years imprisonment mandated under the juvenile law.

2. The Reserve Bank of India, RBI, has permitted premature encashment of 8 per cent Savings (Taxable) Bonds for individual investors who are 60 years and above.

3. The Public Enterprises Selection Board on 30 August 2013 recommended Dinesh K Sarraf as the next head of the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC). He will succeed Sudhir Vasudeva, who superannuates in February 2014. Dinesh K Sarraf is 56-year-old.

4. Russian President Vladimir Putin has dismissed US claims that Syria's regime used chemical weapons, describing them as utter nonsense.

5. The government has approved denotification of six special economic zones, SEZs, projects, including one textile sector and five IT SEZs.

6. Justice Nuthalapati Venkata Ramana, judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court was on 30 August 2013 appointed as the new Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court.

7. India has stormed into the finals of the 9th Men's Asia Cup Hockey tournament. In the second semi-final at Ipoh on Friday, they beat hosts Malaysia, 2-0.

8. The new Companies Bill has received President''s assent, that will make it into a law replacing the nearly six-decade old regulations that govern corporates in the country.

9. Seamus Heaney, acclaimed by many as the best Irish poet since WB Yeats, has diedaged 74. Heaney was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1995 "for works of lyrical beauty and ethical depth, which exalt everyday miracles and the living past".

10. The market size of online sale of goods and services, or e-tailing, in India is estimated to grow to USD 56 billion from the current USD 1 billion by 2023, according to industry experts.
